Background of the Study
Medical errors remain one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and they are a significant concern in the Nigerian healthcare system. Studies indicate that hospital management plays a crucial role in minimizing medical errors by implementing effective systems, protocols, and staff training (Eze & Okeke, 2023). Gombe State, with its diverse healthcare facilities, provides an interesting context for examining the impact of hospital management on reducing medical errors.
Hospital management, particularly in terms of leadership, organizational culture, and the implementation of patient safety initiatives, directly influences the frequency and nature of medical errors. In Gombe State, many healthcare facilities still face challenges related to outdated practices, insufficient staff training, and inadequate safety systems, all of which contribute to medical errors (Olabode & Adamu, 2024). This study seeks to explore how hospital management practices can reduce the occurrence of medical errors in healthcare facilities in Gombe State.
Statement of the Problem
Medical errors in Nigerian healthcare facilities continue to be a major concern, particularly in poorly managed hospitals where staff training and safety protocols are insufficient. In Gombe State, hospitals face similar issues, leading to an increased risk of errors that harm patients. Despite various initiatives aimed at improving healthcare quality, hospital management practices in Gombe State have yet to be fully evaluated for their effectiveness in reducing these errors.
This study aims to investigate the role of hospital management in minimizing medical errors within healthcare facilities in Gombe State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of hospital management in reducing medical errors in Gombe State healthcare facilities.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of hospital management strategies in improving patient safety and minimizing errors.
3. To identify recommendations for improving hospital management practices to reduce medical errors in Gombe State.
Research Questions
1. What role does hospital management play in reducing medical errors in healthcare facilities in Gombe State?
2. How effective are the hospital management strategies in improving patient safety and minimizing errors?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance hospital management practices and reduce medical errors in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Effective hospital management practices significantly reduce the occurrence of medical errors in healthcare facilities in Gombe State.
2. The implementation of safety protocols and staff training in Gombe State hospitals has a significant impact on patient safety and error reduction.
3. Enhancing hospital management practices will lead to a decrease in medical errors and improve healthcare outcomes in Gombe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on healthcare facilities in Gombe State, including both public and private hospitals. Limitations include challenges in obtaining data on medical errors due to underreporting and the subjective nature of measuring patient safety outcomes.
Definitions of Terms
• Medical Errors: Mistakes in medical practice that harm patients, including errors in diagnosis, medication administration, and surgical procedures.
• Hospital Management: The administrative functions responsible for overseeing hospital operations, including leadership, staff training, and safety protocols.
